What Is Yoga?
Yoga’s magnificent heritage extends over a
span of 5000 years. It is believed that this physical and mental
discipline is India’s greatest gift to the world. Yoga is
a tradition which seeks to liberate us from the limited notion of
who we are. It teaches us to be at one with nature and the Universe,
to be respectful and kind to others, to let go of attachment and
false desires, to discover the path of one’s true self, and
connect body, mind and soul. This ancient practice and way of life,
begins with one’s purity of the mind and body, contentment
with all that is, transcendence of the ego, and contemplation and
devotion to the deeper levels of being.
People practice yoga for many different reasons:
to stay fit, to stay healthy, to balance the nervous system, to
calm the mind, to lead a more meaningful way of life. Although these
intentions are valuable, and should be practiced, traditionally
yoga has been employed as a pathway out of suffering and to liberation
or enlightenment. Practitioners of yoga believe that we can never
be completely satisfied with life until we have found happiness
beyond pleasure and pain. Even when we are completely fit and healthy,
have the best career, a wonderful life partner, and live a meaningful
life, deep down we still feel ill at ease.
The challenge to unlock yoga’s full potential
stands before us. It is up to us to live a life filled with non
harm, kindness, tolerance, cooperation, forgiveness, contentment,
peace, and genuine happiness. Yoga is a potent antidote to suffering
and its spiritual tradition can fulfill our aspiration for inner
freedom, peace of mind, lasting happiness, and ultimately experience
Samadhi.

“Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals
with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects
of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga
means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness
with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced
attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance
of one’s actions.”
